A Month of Devotional Thought — Demeter, Day 5

Today’s topic is about Demeter’s family ties. The “short” form of this is the Major and Minor Olympian Gods along with Chronos, Rhea, Ouranos, and Gaea. The full form of this is the entire Hellenic pantheon including the ouranic, oceanic and chthonic deities who are not directly related to the Titans, such as Nyx, Chaos, Tartarus and Pontus.

To list all of the relationships would take pages and pages of writing so that is why most people (including myself) focus mainly on Demeter’s close relations — especially her relationship with her grandmother Gaea, her mother Rhea, and her daughter Persephone.

A friend of mine by the name of Dax has said that in his view, (which I’m inclined to believe in) Gaea is the Earth herself, Rhea is the ruler of animal and plant life in general, Demeter is tamed growth of both animals and plants, and Persephone is the ruler of the crop cycle of life, death, and rebirth. This pattern of greater focus as the generations of the Theoi pass is what leads to Demeter and Persephone being the Two Goddesses of the Eleusinian Mysteries as without Persephone to actively participate in the cycle of rebirth, Demeter does not allow the unchecked growth of the agricultural animals and plants.
